SFC's Grow Local program offers the resources and education to enable children and adults in Central Texas to develop skills in food production and organic gardening as well as an understanding of the importance of local food production for the health and well-being of themselves, their families and community, and the environment.

Growing your own food is fun and therapeutic but sharing the food you grew with a friend in need is exhilarating. Spread the Harvest is a unique food-sharing program of Sustainable Food Center (SFC) that helps children and adults in Central Texas to grow healthy food for themselves and their families, and to share with friends, neighbors and food pantries. Each year, over 1,000 gardeners receive the tools and training necessary to use their gardening talents to meet personal as well as local community food needs. Some individuals qualify for benefits such as:

  • Free vegetable, fruit, and herb seeds
  • 1 free cubic yard of compost per year
  • 10-20 vegetable, fruit, and herb transplants per year

Anyone can enjoy:

  • Subscription to SFC's Grow Local listserv, with info on upcoming gardening events, classes, workdays, and more
  • Technical assistance
  • Access to SFC's tool and book lending library

In order to remain active in the program, gardeners agree to track the amount of food harvested and shared from their garden and fill out a brief survey four times a year. This information is very important because it helps us gauge the impact of our services in the community.
