School gardens, local farms, and other elements of our food systems provide an excellent context for teachers. Educators at participating schools can take advantage of onsite gardens as teaching tools, and can incorporate nutrition and food systems into countless in-class lessons. SFC is exploring several curricula, including our own publication, The School Farm (designed for elementary school students), to support the efforts of teachers who are integrating food and farm lessons into their classrooms.

SFC works with teachers from partner schools to develop in-class lessons for core-curriculum Middle School classes that correspond to TEKS requirements.

School gardens are functional tools for teaching a variety of subjects &mdash science, math, language arts, social studies and others. As SFC works with faculty, staff, and volunteer School Garden Mentors to establish school gardens for the afterschool program, we encourage input from teachers who are committed to using gardens as teaching tools. Our network of local farmers, nutritionists, and other volunteers are available for classroom appearances at partner schools to share lessons such as fractions using a recipe, Texas history from an agricultural perspective, or language arts using plants and food as composition topics.
