Community Youth & Gardening

SFC's Community and Youth Gardening program offers the resources and education to enable children and adults in Central Texas to develop skills in food production and organic gardening as well as an understanding of the importance of local food production for the health and well-being of themselves, their families and community, and the environment.

Texas is #1... in food insecurity that is. This means that over 16% of households in this great state lack the means to provide consistent nourishment for maintaining health. Access to fresh, nutritious, affordable food by community members is vital in promoting community health and preventing disease. For many urban residents, growing their own food is essential for survival.

Through work with community and school gardens, workshops, and technical assistance, SFC:

  • Empowers individuals to meet their basic food needs.
  • Encourages the consumption and sharing of fresh produce with food pantries and low-income neighbors
  • Promotes sustainable gardening practices
  • Improves youth understanding of basic scientific concepts and educates them about the sources of food
  • Provide opportunities for urban residents to work cooperatively
  • Transforms vacant urban lots into places of beauty, community, and abundance
