In to increase local food production and to improve the gardening knowledge and skills of area residents, SFC offers interactive, educational workshops coving topics from basic organic gardening to integrated pest management.
Basic Organic Gardening Workshop:
Get your hands dirty while learning about how to start your own vegetable garden in Central Texas. This interactive, bilingual workshop teaches participants about garden bed preparations, seed selection, general garden maintenance, and pest management.
Youth Gardening Education Workshop:
For teachers and other adults committed to youth enrichment, learn how to integrate innovative, hands-on gardening education into other classroom subjects. Through garden-based education, children gain an understanding of the food systems, confidence in their own ability to grow food, and an enthusiasm for gardening and healthy eating. Prepare future generations of gardeners and nurture the healthy development of young people.
School Garden Mentor Training:
Shape the minds of future generations. Teach youth about basic scientific concepts, organic youth gardening and the benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables through garden-based education. The School Garden Mentor Training encourages and prepares area gardeners to participate in and assist with the maintenance of school gardens. Initial training to begin this fall.
Spread the Harvest:
Share the fruits of your labor with others. Spread the Harvest, a hunger relief program of Sustainable Food Center, provides technical assistance and resources to low-income gardeners in Travis County in exchange for their donation of extra produce to neighbors and community food banks.
To become a Spread the Harvest gardener, complete the Spread the Harvest application form and return it to Sustainable Food Center.
